One of the most sensitive regions to climate change

Mountains are among the regions most sensitive to climate change. Mountains provide freshwater to half of the world’s population and are home to half of all global biodiversity hotspots, as well as being important agro biodiversity centres. Climate change will affect freshwaters reserves in mountains and will affect availability in low areas. Also, mountains are more frequently impacted by extreme events that cause disasters. These demonstrates the key role that mountain regions play in global development.*

With the micro site Climate change in mountains in the UNFCCC COPs we seek to be a tool of information and an archive to follow up the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and all kind of materials that are disseminated around the issue of climate change and that are of interest to mountain areas.

This micro site aims to raise awareness on the importance of climate change in mountains and share relevant contents among this topic.

It is an initiative of the Mountain Forum and the Mountain Partnership, with the collaboration from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Consortium for the Sustainable Development of the Andean Ecoregion (CONDESAN), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), FAO and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).
